Most oppressive RV laws...which state?

I was looking through the RV Rights section on Good Sam and can not believe how many cities are RV "unfriendly". As a whole it looks like California is the worst. How can states calim to be RV friendly yet have so many oppressive laws? Doesn't sound like a good place for an RVer to live.

RE: Grand Canyon planning

All good advice... We too did GC,Bryce and Zion.. I can honestly say after two days in the South rim I was ready to move on. Trailer village is a decent place to stay.
I agree that the average person does not spend more than a couple days at the Canyon (same arguement for a lot of other National Parks). This is evident by watching the RVs come and go at the Trailer Village. I guess that they can't find anything to do. The choices are not laid out in front of them; it is harder to follow the crowd. It is a shame because I believe that they miss a lot. But most people have limited time so that's usually why it is so hectic.

RE: Wichita Falls, Tx.

Do you make the drive from Covington to Vernon in a day?
No we try and limit travel to 300-400 mi a day so will hit Tyler the first night and then Vernon the second.
I was just curious. That's probably the best way to do it.
I have made the trip to the rockies via U.S. 287 dozens of times and from here it's a long way!
We depart Lafayette at 5 AM and make it to Goodlett, TX to the Ole Town Cotton Gin RV Park by 5 PM. That's about 630 miles. We do not mind this long first day. It would be hard for you to make it to Goodlett as you are a couple hours further East than I am. The next day the scenery changes enough to suite us and we start slowing down. In fact the second night we spend at Capulin RV park so that we can be sure to drive up Capulin volcano. I believe that's about 300 miles the second day.
I can not drive such a long day upon return, however. After a few weeks of a much slower pace it seems more natural to just take it easy.
I believe in slowing down on trips with this one exception: I want to put some miles between here and there on the first day!

I have stayed at Lake Arrowhead State Park in a tent...I don't remember the RV setups. It was very scenic, as I remember. You will have to check it out.

RE: I-10 or I-20

I-20 isn't bad but not very exciting. Road surface around Pecos is (or was a year ago) badly rutted with truck tires imprints in the asphalt. If going I-10 might consider getting off it West of San Antonio and driving U.S. 90, a great 2 lane road taking you to Van Horn. Much more fun than I-10 with interesting places to see such as Del Rio, Seminole Canyon, Langtry, Marathon, Alpine, Marfa.
Having just driven US 90 for the first time last month I have to agree. Extremely nice road and beautiful scenery.

RE: I-10 or I-20

It's almost a toss-up. Better scenery (Chihuahuan Desert)on I-10 west of San Antonio vs. a lot of green farm country on I-20 West of Dallas.
Being from South Louisiana I prefer the desert scenery.

RE: These people are driving me crazy!!

About all the junk mail. You can "opt out" of all those annoying insurance and credit card offers in the mail. It prevents the credit reporting firms from providing your credit information on a list for firm offers.
Here is a link:
opt out list
This site asks you for your Social Security number. You should NEVER give that out. Especially to a .com

RE: These people are driving me crazy!!

I always tell the telemarketers to hold on for a moment and just set the phone down. Longest one stayed for about 3 minutes.
We like to ask them to please hold. Then set the phone down and go away...
We once pretended that they had just called into a radio station and was the "Lucky Caller". For this they won a FREE CAT. Just come by the station and piclk it up or give us your address and we'll deliver it--free anywhere in the country.
Once I ordered everything that they had and when they called back for verification my wife acted angry, "That kid. He's only 9 and he keeps doing that..." They were VERY angry and hung up.

RE: Gatlinburg

We too return to the Smokies about every other year and each time spend two to four weeks in the area--usually split between Cherokee and Gatlinburg. It is a place that we feel is a second home.

RE: US Hwy 90 Del Rio to Marathon

We just returned from Big Bend and Highway 90 is in great condition. Gas in each town along the way was available and saw many RV parks.

RE: Thanksgiving suggestion/destination

I am leaving for Big Bend today for a week stay at the park. I'll be part of a group of geologists going in to study parts of the park. I've not been there before. While I am not taking the RV I will look for possibilities for a return trip. It looks like the temperatures there have moderated a bit.

RE: Georgia vs Alabama

Go Bama! I hope the only loss this year for Alabama is to LSU! But, LSU has a long way to go with their poor quarterback play. Remember our starter this year was dismissed from the team.
We still like Nick regardless of what you might hear in the media.
Georiga got a butt whipping. They got handled. They got smacked. They were used and abused. They got tossed. They were slapped and told, "Georiga who?".

RE: Ahhhh - Fall is here

Fall is on its way for sure. We are currently in Kalispell, MT (near Glacier National Park). It is getting colder every day (frost this morning). We need to go south, but we found out today that we need a repair (our throttle air control). If we don't get out of here soon we may be in for the winter!
If you don't mind could you please do a favor for me? Gently get down on your hands and knees and kiss the ground. Say that this is for the guy in Louisiana who wishes he was in Montana! Preferably do it in Glacier National Park.

RE: Grand Canyon planning

The Petrified Forest and Painted Desert would be a nice stop along the way as you head-up from Arkansas. Years ago the mode and mechanism of implacement of the logs were not clearly understood. Certainly after Mt. St. Helens it is clear that the logs were transported to that area and burried in ash after a major volcanic eruption. It should be renamed, "Petrified Log Jam" NM. Many people like to have a piece of petrified wood to take home. There was a rock shop in Holbrook, AZ that sold nice pieces of petrified wood. This place had huge piles outside in a fenced-in area. The pieces of petrified branches were interesting to me and I bought a few.
Petrified Forest NP is on Triassic grounds. On those lands walked the first dinosaurs. The visitor center has a display about this. As you walk along the trail behind the visitor's center think about that. Imagine walking up to one of those creatures while hiking (Ask your daughter what would she do?)! Look at photos of the eruptive landscape around Mt. St. Helens and compare that to what you see at Petrified Forest. The landscape is tremendously modified. If you see all the downed trees around St. Helens clogging lakes and rivers the idea that so many logs could collect at Petrified Forest is easier to understand. You could spend a couple days going through the area; most people spend a couple hours. Snap a few photographs wherever you go but don't let the camera interfere with your vacation as many people do. The point is to photograph what you observe. If you see something worth pointing out or realize something particular capture it. These photographs will be far more meaningful to you afterwards than random shots of landscape. I bring this up because it was at Petrified Forest that I have a fond story of a couple who buzzed past me on the trail with cameras blazing. Only later in the parking lot I heard one of them ask, "I wonder how all those marbelized logs got there?". Amazing.

RE: Your Fuel/Oil comments - please post here

How long do you think the 150 gallons will last? I know it is dependent on weather. I do not have an idea of the costs for heating oil for a home.
